We’re Hiring: Why Jacobs Heating is a Great Place to Start or Grow Your HVAC Career

Hello! We’re Jacobs Heating and Air Conditioning, a family-owned and operated company! We’ve been providing heating and cooling (HVAC) services in Portland, OR and Vancouver, WA since 1952. We specialize in HVAC maintenance and repair and product installation (additionally, learn more about our lesser-known services here!).

Not only does Jacobs provide top-notch services to local residents and business owners, but we also deeply care about the people we employ. From one employee who has been with us for 18 years, they say, “Jacobs looks within to hire and there are opportunities to move up and advance your career.”

We love building our team, and guess what? We’re hiring! That’s right, we’re looking for both Service Technicians and Installers. Read on to learn more about the positions and benefits of being on the Jacobs team, or head over to our Careers page to apply!

Incredible Loyalty

Our employees feel cared for, and with that, they stay with us for a long time. We truly show dedication to our employees and their families. One employee, for example, will be celebrating their 39th work anniversary with Jacobs this coming July!

We have several employees who have been here for anywhere between 5-10-15-20 years. Our longest serving Service Technician has been with us for 22 years!

Positions We’re Hiring For

Service Technicians

We are currently hiring Service Technicians!

A Day in the Life of a Service Tech

For Service Technicians, you’ll start the day from home with a company-provided vehicle. The night before work, you are dispatched your first call via text message and can view the schedule for the day on a company-provided smartphone or tablet. Depending on the season and the weather, the day could bring maintenance on either residential or commercial spaces. When the temperatures rise or fall, troubleshooting is most often required. The day usually starts between 7-7:30 a.m., with most technicians running 8-hour days. When the weather gets rough, the working hours can get longer in order to accommodate the high demand.

Experience Required

For Service Techs, we ask for 5 years of experience with CFC and NATE licenses.

Installers

We are currently hiring Installers!

A Day in the Life of a Service Tech

The day-to-day for Installers is similar to Service Technicians. Most Installers have company vehicles. Residential Installers head to the office at around 7-7:30 a.m. to get briefed on their job for the day. They grab the equipment and tools necessary to do their jobs, and the supervisors offer them advice on what they need to look out for on the install they’re doing that day. They spend all day at a customer’s house, usually working 8 hours, sometimes less or more depending on the job.

Experience Required

For Installers, we generally look for 5 years of experience. However, for the right fit, we are also happy to take on newbies with little to no experience!

What We Look for in New Hires

In any role, what we really look for is the right attitude. We want new hires to go above and beyond when it comes to providing exceptional customer service. Additionally, we also look for the following characteristics:

  • Team players
  • Mechanically inclined
  • Good driving record
  • Fearlessness
  • Customer service
  • Technical ability
  • Charm
  • Good work ethic

Benefits of Working with Jacobs

In terms of direct benefits, we offer many wonderful benefits to help support employees and their families. A few of these include:

  • Company vehicles for most employees working out in the field
  • Medical and dental insurance
  • A spiff or incentive plan for field employees and internal office employees
  • 401k with 3% company match
  • PTO
  • For Service Technicians, we have an 11 week on-call rotation to give Techs adequate breaks

In addition to these perks and benefits, we also offer many different growth opportunities and always look to promote from within. We’ve had several employees start as delivery drivers, then become Installers, later Service Technicians, and end up becoming a Consultant for replacing or adding equipment in new homes. We love seeing our employees flourish and fulfill their greatest potential.
